profusion, borne above water, of deep, dusky pink, with the fragrance
of crushed almonds. Excellent for cutting, and good for tub culture. JESSIEANA —Large, of classic form, delicate, even shade of pink.
Small grower. LUCIANA —Small, star-shaped blooms of rich, glowing rose. Sweet
scented. Small grower. Floats the first year, thrusts blooms above the
water after it becomes established. minor —An old and loved American variety, usually known as the
Mill Pond Lily. Half to a quarter as large as the average lily, with
blooms 2 to 3 inches across and leaves 3 to 5 inches. A rapid grower
and prolific bloomer in shallow or deep water. Good for tub culture.
Flowers are pure white, dainty and very fragrant. Leaves are soft green,
with reddish undersurface. floribus roseus—Similar to above except that the outside of petals and sepals is tinged pink. Medium grower. rosea —The Cape Cod Pond Lily, intense pink, deepening toward the
center. Has one of the most pleasant scents of all water-lilies. Foliage
purplish-green. rosea prolifera—Fragrant with delicate pink blooms, deepening to rich rose and later to carmine in the center. Medium grower. SULPHUREA—Marliac.
A pretty hybrid of N. odorata and N. mexicana. Blooms are sulfur-yellow
and fragrant. As the plant ages, long, slender stems thrust the flowers
higher and higher above the water. Foliage is green, with chocolate
markings. Free blooming and prolific within a small pond space. GRANDIFLORA—Marliac.
Quite similar to the above, but with larger blooms and foliage. Also
confines itself to small pond space. Turicensis — Soft-rose, medium-sized blooms with a sweet scent.
Medium grower. OPALISQUE—Marliac.
Medium-sized bloom of soft rose, changing to shell-pink with age. Golden
stamens. Thrusts blooms above water. PAUL HARIOT—Marliac . A small plant with large, interesting blooms
that open about the color of a Talisman rose, turn orange-pink the next
day, and finally darken to deep red. Shows more color range than any
other Changeable water-lily. Blooms are held erect. Foliage dark green,
spotted maroon. Fine for tubs. Almost all dealers carry it. PHOEBUS—Marliac .
Another good Changeable, somewhat larger, but still good for tubs. Blooms
open yellow, striped red, with fiery-orange stamens. Within a few days
the hue deepens to coppery red. Foliage rich green, mottled brown. PHOENIX—Marliac.
Small, bright-red blooms streaked white. Compact grower.
PICCIOLA—Marliac. Tremendous
blooms, often 9 to 10 inches in diameter, of vivid amaranth-crimson.
Strong and extensive grower.PINK OPAL —One of the most popular pinks. Blooms are star-shaped,
a delicate shade of pink, and excellent for cutting. The fragrance of
a single bloom will perfume a room. Flowers are borne erect above the
water. Foliage is green with a bronzy overcast. Excellent for small
ponds and tubs.
