Giving back and doing good

Books for Buckets is a children’s book donation program to promote literacy and book ownership in our communities. It happens every year during the season of giving. During Northwestern’s Men’s basketball season, we donate a set of books through Bernie’s for every three-pointer made during home games. And in the spring, Books for Buckets turns into a reading contest where kids can win prizes from local businesses for reading varying amounts of books. To date, Rose has donated 28,608 Books to underserved children throughout Chicagoland through Bernie’s Book Bank with this multifaceted program.

There’s nothing like feeling the pages of a physical book. In a world full of bright screens on devices, encouraging children to read physical books is more important than ever. Studies have shown significant success in adulthood due to owning and reading books at a young age. We believe in empowering children to read for ways to a better life.

How to participate

We need your help to make the biggest impact possible in our communities! Help by donating gently used children’s books! We ask that the books be in good condition (ie in the correct binding, no holes or torn pages) and age appropriate for children up to 6th grade. Bernie’s Book Bank asks: No holiday or religious books or textbooks, please.

For every 8 children’s books donated, you’ll receive a free Northwestern men’s basketball ticket!
