ZIMBABWE recorded an 18 percent increase in aquaculture production in the first quarter of the year, a senior government official said.

in an interview with The Sunday Mail OnlineDeputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Davis Marapira said more farmers are interested in the fisheries sector.

“The Second Round Crop and Livestock Assessment for 2021-2022 shows an 18 percent increase in the number of fish ponds from 5,634 in 2021 to 6,988 as of April 2022.

“The increase has been mainly in the smallholder sector and the actual numbers are expected to be higher as more farmers are involved in fisheries,” he said.

Deputy Minister Marapira said that this season fish production is expected to increase from 5,000 tons in 2021 to 7,000 tons.
